Getting Started
What to Expect
Starting therapy can feel like a big step. Here's what the process looks like so there are no surprises.
Step 1: Free Consultation (20 Minutes)
Everything starts with a free 20-minute consultation, either by phone or video. This isn't a therapy session. It's a low-pressure conversation where we:
- Talk briefly about what you're experiencing
- Discuss whether my approach is likely to help
- Answer any questions you have about therapy, my methods, or logistics
- Decide together if working together makes sense
There's no obligation to book a session after the consultation. If I don't think I'm the right fit, I'll say so and point you toward someone who might be.
Step 2: Your First Session
If we decide to work together, your first full session (50 minutes) covers several important areas:
- Informed consent: We go through the informed consent to address any questions you have about confidentiality, risks and benefits of treatment.
- Your pain history and story: We go through your pain history in detail, highlighting features of your life that contributed to pain persistence.
- Early experiences: We often review some early childhood experiences. If there are early traumas that are still affecting your life, we consider a plan for how to work through the emotional pain in future sessions.
- Your strengths: The first session also aims to highlight your strengths, including your self-soothing capacity and your internal models of care and compassion.
Step 3: Ongoing Therapy
Sessions are typically weekly, though we can adjust the frequency based on your needs and schedule. Each session is 50 minutes.
Depending on what we're working on, a session might include:
- Pain Reprocessing Therapy exercises
- A Brainspotting session
- ACT-based exploration of values, barriers, and committed action
- Clinical hypnosis
- Somatic awareness and mindfulness practices
- Conversation about what's showing up in your life between sessions
I don't use a one-size-fits-all protocol. The approach is tailored to you: what you need, what you respond to, and what's most helpful in each moment.
How Long Does Therapy Take?
This varies significantly depending on what we're working on:
- Chronic pain (PRT focus): Many clients see meaningful shifts within 8 to 12 sessions. Some experience significant reduction in pain sooner.
- Trauma: Depends on the complexity and history. Some single-incident traumas resolve in a few sessions; complex trauma may take longer.
- Anxiety: Most clients notice changes within the first few sessions, with deeper shifts developing over 10 to 16 sessions.
I don't believe in keeping people in therapy longer than they need to be. My goal is to help you develop the skills and shifts you need, and then for you to not need me anymore.
